Contact Clauses machen englische Relativsätze kürzer: Aus the book that I bought wird the book I bought. Nach dieser Seite kannst du sicher prüfen, wann who, which oder that wegfallen dürfen.
- Ich kann entscheiden, wann *who/which/that* stehen bleiben muss.
Contact Clause
Eine Contact Clause ist ein defining relative clause, in dem who, which oder that weggelassen wird, weil das Relativpronomen im Relativsatz Objekt ist.
Mit und ohne Relativpronomen:
- This is the book that I bought yesterday.
- This is the book I bought yesterday.

Objekt: weglassen erlaubt
- The girl who I saw was smiling.
- The girl I saw was smiling.
Im Relativsatz ist I das Subjekt und who/the girl das Objekt von saw. Deshalb darf who weg.
Subjekt: weglassen nicht erlaubt
- The girl who saw me was smiling.
- Nicht: The girl saw me was smiling.
Hier führt who/the girl die Handlung saw aus. Deshalb muss who stehen bleiben.
Kommt nach who/which/that ein Subjekt wie I, you, we, my brother?

Satz: Here is the photo that Sarah took.
- Bezugswort: the photo
- Relativsatz: that Sarah took
- Nach that steht Sarah, also ein Subjekt.
- That ist Objekt von took.
- Contact Clause: Here is the photo Sarah took.
Gegenbeispiel:
Here is the photo that shows our school.
Nach that steht direkt das Verb shows. That ist Subjekt. Es darf nicht wegfallen.

Präpositionen am Ende
Manche Verben gehören mit einer Präposition zusammen: look for, talk about, listen to, wait for. In Contact Clauses steht diese Präposition meistens am Ende.
Mit Präposition:
This is the key that I was looking for.
This is the key I was looking for.
She is the person who I talked to.
She is the person I talked to.
That is the topic that we spoke about.
That is the topic we spoke about.
Im sehr formellen Englisch kann die Präposition vorne stehen: the person to whom I spoke.

- The book that you gave me is great.
Nach that steht you. Weglassen erlaubt: The book you gave me is great.
- The book that helped me is on the desk.
Nach that steht helped. Weglassen nicht erlaubt.
- The girl who my brother likes is in my class.
Nach who steht my brother. Weglassen erlaubt: The girl my brother likes is in my class.

Zusammenfassung
Contact Clauses sind notwendige Relativsätze ohne who, which oder that. Du darfst das Relativpronomen weglassen, wenn es im Relativsatz Objekt ist und danach ein eigenes Subjekt folgt: the book I bought. Du darfst es nicht weglassen, wenn es Subjekt ist und direkt ein Verb folgt: the book that helped me. Bei Verben mit Präposition steht die Präposition in normalen Contact Clauses oft am Ende: the person I talked to.
